Discussing the origins of Portugal from a geopolitical perspective involves conducting an analysis, selecting periods and facts that appear to be relevant, in order to identify the processes and dynamics that took shape during the long process of the Christian reconquest of the Iberian Peninsula, and which determined the power relations between the various Christian kingdoms that were formed during this process, and conditioned the foundation of a new nation, a new independent kingdom, Portugal.

In this historical summary, which takes us back to the beginning of the Christian reconquest of the Iberian Peninsula, we will seek to find some answers to these and other questions.

General António Gil

The third conference in this series took place on 17 September and was given by Lieutenant General António Campo Gil, former Deputy Chief of Staff of the Army (2011–2014). In his speech, the speaker presented a summary of the history of the territory that would become Portugal, from a geopolitical and strategic perspective.

The analysis focused on the most relevant periods and facts, seeking to identify the processes and dynamics that developed over the long period of the Christian Reconquest of the Iberian Peninsula. The power relations between the various Christian kingdoms then in formation were also addressed, highlighting how these conditioned the emergence of a new political entity: the independent Kingdom of Portugal.
