Intensive Portuguese Course for Beginners

Course Content

Module 1: Personal presentation and interpersonal communication (5h00)

  • Introductions and greetings: introducing yourself and others; greeting people; giving and asking for personal and professional information.
  • Nationality: talking about your own nationality and that of others; identifying and referring to countries of origin; indicating your origin and nationality.

Module 2: Daily routines and everyday information (5h00)

  • Daily routine: hours; meals; transport; travelling around Lisbon;
  • Talking about eating habits in your country of origin and in Portugal.
  • Free time: leisure activities related to sport, radio, television, among others.
    Description of daily routine.

Module 3: Eating habits, culture and leisure (5h00)

  • Recognition of food and drink names.
  • Interpretation and sharing of eating habits and table manners.
  • Recognition of essential vocabulary related to tableware.
  • Identification of names of establishments and food sales sections.
  • Reading and interpreting a menu.
  • Placing an order in a café or restaurant.

Module 4: Directions, instructions, and forms (5h00)

  • Naming and referring to health problems related to different parts of the human body.
  • Filling in forms.

Module 5: Labour market, professions and activities (5h00)

  • Knowledge and reference to professions in Portuguese, distinguishing between masculine and feminine forms.

Inês Gama
Portuguese language courses

Inês Gama

Master's degree in Portuguese as a Foreign Language and Second Language and bachelor's degree in Portuguese with a Minor in Modern Languages from the Faculty of Arts of the University of Coimbra. Completed an internship in teaching Portuguese as a foreign language (PLE) at Jagiellonian University in Krakow (Poland). Worked as a Portuguese language lecturer at the University Institute of Lisbon (Iscte). Currently works as a Portuguese linguistics consultant on the website Ciberdúvidas da Língua Portuguesa, owned by Iscte, and as a Portuguese language teacher at the Language and Culture Center of the Polytechnic Institute of Lisbon (CLiC-IPL). Also collaborated with the Lisbon City Foundation as a Portuguese language trainer for migrant communities.

Manuela Gonzalez
Portuguese language courses

Manuela Sol González

PhD candidate in Portuguese as a Foreign Language, attended a master's degree in Language Management and a bachelor's degree in Letters with a focus on linguistics. Specialized in conference interpretation technique, she has extensive experience in the field of education and training, as a Portuguese teacher, and also conducts contrastive studies between Spanish and Portuguese. She was a simultaneous and consecutive interpreter at the Youth Olympic Games, promoted by UN Women Brazil, as well as conducted several workshops as an interpreter at an international level. She was granted a scholarship by the Camões Institute in Lisbon to specialize in Portuguese language and culture, and currently holds a research scholarship, also awarded by the Camões Institute in Lisbon, to conduct research on languages and migrations, focusing on the Ukrainian community residing in Lisbon and their relationship with the Portuguese language.

Ivan Clemente
Portuguese language courses

Ivan Clemente

Master's degree in Clinical Psychology and certified trainer. He worked as a psychologist and technical director in a children's and youth home, and as a socio-cultural animator in a home for people with disabilities. In Maputo, he was a trainer and coordinated a large training project, working with some of the largest companies in the country. As well as Mozambique and Portugal, he also lived in the Netherlands and India. In India, he began teaching English as a volunteer in several social projects, including an orphanage and a community centre for Tibetan refugees. On his return to Lisbon, he devoted himself to teaching Portuguese to foreigners as well as English, and this is now his main occupation. He has also been an English-Portuguese and English-Portuguese translator for over 20 years.

Sílvia Mendes
Portuguese language courses

Sílvia Mendes

Master’s degree in Portuguese as a Second and Foreign Language, as well as being a certified trainer, she has been teaching Portuguese as a foreign language since 2018. With teaching experience in Portugal and abroad, she has taught in countries such as Timor-Leste and Ethiopia. She was a trainer of Portuguese language teachers in Guinea-Bissau, as part of the PRECASE project by Camões – Institute for Cooperation and Language, I.P. Alongside teaching, she has a keen interest in research in areas such as innovative pedagogical methodologies, the gamification of teaching, and the use of Artificial Intelligence in language teaching/learning. She herself has been a learner of foreign languages for a long time.

Nuno Paulino
Portuguese language courses

Nuno Paulino

Ph.D. candidate in Linguistics with a thesis on Language Acquisition and Bilingualism in language groups such as Portuguese, Guinea-Bissau Creole, and Cape Verdean Creole. Holds a Master's degree in Portuguese Linguistics, specializing in linguistic variation, and a Bachelor's degree in Modern Languages with a minor in English, Portuguese, and Spanish. He serves as a Portuguese as a foreign language instructor at the Institute of Portuguese Language and Culture at the Faculty of Arts of the University of Lisbon (ICLP) and as an examiner at the Center for Evaluation and Certification of Portuguese as a Foreign Language (CAPLE). Since 2022, works as a copy editor at the JPL (Journal of Portuguese Linguistics) and has several scientific publications in the field of Linguistics.

Mara Ferreira
Portuguese language courses

Mara Ferreira

Bachelor's degree in Basic Education, with a specialization in Portuguese-French in the field of Pedagogy. An experienced teacher in the area of Portuguese as a foreign language, has been a member of the Pedagogical Training Scholarship Program CCP (Pedagogical Competence Certification) since 2004. Has extensive experience as a trainer in Language and Communication, French/Portuguese Language, and Language Didactics. In the scope of EFA (Education and Adult Training) and RVCC (Recognition, Validation, and Certification of Competences) courses, she has served as a coordinator and social mediator in groups and classes. She was a guest speaker at the "Cultural Diversity" seminar, promoted by the ACAS Association (Luso-Cape Verdean Association of Sintra). She participated in a pioneering literacy project in partnership with the K’Cidade Association and the Islamic Association of Tapada das Mercês. Additionally, she contributes to the creation of Portuguese Language learning materials as a trainer for the Portuguese as a Foreign Language course at levels A1 and A2 at the CPR (Portuguese Refugee Center).
