The activities of the project ‘TOD@S IN em Alvalade – Social inclusion through education in a post-pandemic context’ continue at a good pace.

On 11 February, the first individualised tutoring sessions began at the Eugénio dos Santos Primary School, part of the Rainha Dona Leonor School Group, where 27 children and young people from the 2nd and 3rd cycles were accompanied.

March 10 marked the start of tutoring at the Almirante Gago Coutinho Primary School, part of the Alvalade School Group, where 10 children and young people from the 2nd and 3rd cycles were identified for this individualised support.

The support is provided by a total of 26 tutors: 16 volunteer tutors from the community and 10 teacher tutors.

The first sessions: building trust between tutor and tutee

These first sessions are mainly about getting to know each other, setting boundaries and rules, and defining goals for the tutoring. At this stage, it’s really important to keep things fun so that kids and teens feel comfortable and there’s space to build a relationship of respect and trust.

For tutors, it is also a time to get to know the profile and motivations of their mentees, so that they can adapt the weekly proposals to the individuality of each child and young person.

Training, weekly monitoring of tutors and appropriate resources

This work in the field is supported by the project management team, which meets weekly with the tutors, helping to identify and select teaching resources appropriate to the ages and needs of the children and young people, as well as their profile, in order to develop life skills. Initial certified training also prepares tutors to monitor children and young people in the field.

Tutors also have access to various educational resources and activity sheets to use in the field, namely the Tod@s ON guide. Created in 2021, in the midst of the pandemic, this guide addresses the specific challenges that arose during this period and which are also relevant to the post-pandemic context.

Next step: group activities

Group activities complement the tutorials by creating a space for developing personal and social skills in a dynamic, fun way that is tailored to the ages and needs of each group. These activities will be developed by the partner organisation in this project: Par-Respostas Sociais.
