Gonçalo Malato’s exhibition – Manipanzo O Outro Eu (Manipanzo The Other Me) – took place at the Fundação Cidade de Lisboa in December 2022. This posthumous exhibition was curated by Carmen Bioque Zurita, who highlights Gonçalo’s “intelligence in the use of color. In all of Gonçalo Malato’s works, there is a balance of colors and volumes that directs the viewer’s gaze from the detail to the whole and vice versa, in a circular fashion. One can guess at different moments that are somehow polarized: from agitation to calm, from rapture to chaos and then to order.”
As Margarida Rebelo Pinto points out, “Gonçalo painted the canvases and cut them up, believing that destruction was necessary for the final result, which he did not want to be beautiful, but unique.”
The exhibition featured a special edition by the publisher By the Book.
