The speaker, who served in the Navy between 1966 and 1969, will draw on his personal experience to recount his time on the eastern shore of Lake Niassa as commander of the Mercúrio motorboat. Later, following a well-planned scheme between Lisbon and Zomba, he was transferred to the motorboat Castor, which had been loaned to the Malawian government on 5 August 1968 under the name John Chilembwe. From the creation of the Metangula Naval Base in 1963 to the end of his mission in the service of the Malawi Navy in 1969, Manuel Agrellos takes us on a journey through a unique geography and era.

Manuel Agrellos

This conference took place on 22 January and featured Manuel Agrellos as speaker. His presentation focused on the Portuguese Navy in Lake Niassa, starting with a historical, geographical and military contextualisation of the region, with reference to the treaties established with England and the processes of defining borders.

The speaker then went on to describe a series of events and circumstances that took place in that part of Africa, many of which he had experienced first-hand, giving the topic a personal and testimonial perspective. The presentation aroused great interest among the participants and gave rise to a lengthy and lively debate, enriched by the presence of colleagues who had also participated in the events discussed.
