The Intensive Portuguese Initiation Course, a 25-hour course held between 6 and 17 May at the premises of the Lisbon City Foundation, ended with an intercultural celebration. The course brought together 12 trainees of various nationalities from countries all over the world, such as Argentina, Australia, Chile, USA, Iran, Russia, Thailand, Turkey and Ukraine.

Designed for foreigners, migrants, or refugees interested in learning the Portuguese language, this course provided participants with the basic knowledge needed to understand and communicate in Portuguese, thus helping to improve the conditions for integration into society and the job market. By the end of the course, the trainees had acquired fundamental skills in terms of lexicon and grammatical structures, enabling them to:

  • Understand and use everyday expressions and simple sentences to fulfil concrete communication needs.
  • Introduce themselves and others, ask questions and give answers about personal aspects such as where they live, the people they know and the things they own.
  • Communicate simply, especially if the interlocutor speaks slowly and clearly and is co-operative.

The celebration at the end of the course included an intercultural snack, valuing the different cultures and gastronomy of the participants and promoting unity and mutual respect.

Hosted by the Lisbon City Foundation, a training entity certified by DGERT (Directorate-General for Employment and Labour Relations), this is an example of the courses on offer for the acquisition of language skills with a view to integrating the participants into the Portuguese society.
