The Fundação Cidade de Lisboa is implementing the project “Cidadania em Jogo: TU decides!”, a pioneering initiative that aims to empower youth in the 3rd cycle of basic education in democratic literacy and civic participation. This project, which combines technology and education, focuses on the development of a digital game centered on fundamental themes such as Sustainable Development, Interculturality, and Human Rights.
Using gamification methodologies, the main objective of the project is to promote democratic literacy and civic participation among young people, using digital technologies as an educational tool. The goal is not only to create an innovative digital game but also to increase by at least 25% the knowledge, involvement, and mobilization for community activities of 1,000 students in the 3rd cycle over a six-month period.
Since its launch in June, significant steps have been taken. During the summer, a diagnostic of interests and expectations was conducted with students—the report of which is already available—and partner proposals for the design and programming of the game were evaluated. Between September and October, the team established the narrative and design of the game, which is being developed as an intergalactic adventure.
This month, the first visual prototypes emerged, and in December, initial testing of the platform will begin. Starting in January 2025, the game will be tested on a large scale, involving more than 500 students from various schools, with the expectation of impacting up to 1,000 young people and 35 teachers across the country, eventually reaching more than 1,000 schools.
This is more than an educational project: it is a contribution to strengthening democracy, encouraging the active participation of young people in building a more sustainable and inclusive future.
The project is co-funded by the Programa Gulbenkian Democracia e Sociedade Civil, of the Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian, and is promoted by the Fundação Cidade de Lisboa in partnership with Rato – ADCC, Associação Renovar a Mouraria, and the Agrupamentos de Escolas Patrício Prazeres, Alto do Lumiar, Pintor Almada Negreiros and Alvalade.
