What for?

Overall objective: To conduct a study to reflect on the Portuguese education system from the perspective of the integration of NPT immigrant children and young people residing in Portugal and asylum seekers, focusing on three interdependent dimensions: linguistic and cultural diversity, Portuguese language teaching, and the impacts of the pandemic.

Specific objectives:

i) Increase knowledge about the integration of NPT immigrant children and young people residing in Portugal and asylum seekers into the Portuguese education system, identify its weaknesses and potential, and present recommendations; ii) Characterise and analyse existing good practices in the Portuguese education system with regard to the integration of NPT immigrant children and young people residing in Portugal and asylum seekers; iii) Analyse the impacts of the pandemic on the educational pathways of immigrant children and young people; iv) Understand families’ responses to the challenges arising from the pandemic context on the learning pathways of their students; v) Reflect on schools’ responses to immigrant students and families in the context of the pandemic; vi) Improve public policy on the integration of NPT immigrant children and young people residing in Portugal and asylum seekers by disseminating the study to policy makers, key actors in the Portuguese education system and the community at large.

How?

Main Activities:

Conduct a study to reflect on the Portuguese education system from the perspective of the integration of NPT immigrant children and young people residing in Portugal and asylum seekers, focusing on three interdependent dimensions: linguistic and cultural diversity, Portuguese language teaching, and the impacts of the pandemic.
Identify and critically analyse national and/or international good practices from the perspective of the integration of NPT immigrant children and young people residing in Portugal and asylum seekers, with a focus on linguistic and cultural diversity and Portuguese language teaching, through the triangulation of data collected using four research instruments/strategies: document analysis, questionnaire surveys, semi-structured interviews, focus groups, and direct observation of classroom practices.
Communication and dissemination of the study.
