The Lisbon City Foundation (FCL) has launched the first in a series of guides dedicated to supporting the integration of migrants and refugees as part of the “Passport to Citizenship IV” project. “Understand the NIF” demystifies the process of obtaining and using the Tax Identification Number and is the first of 18 topics covered in the CLAIM Guides with the aim of promoting the access to rights and essential services in Portugal. With a practical and accessible approach, the guide offers detailed information on the Tax Identification Number (NIF), which is indispensable for carrying out various activities in the country, such as applying for a residence permit, opening bank accounts, signing contracts and accessing public services and tax benefits.
Over the course of the project, guides will be published on other crucial topics for migrants and refugees, such as creating a Social Security Identification Number (NISS), changing the address at the Social Security and Tax Authorities, the IRS submission process, renewing residence permits or applying for citizenship.
The “Passport to Citizenship IV” project, co-financed by FAMI – the Fund for Asylum, Migration and Integration and AIMA – the Agency for Integration, Migration and Asylum, plans to release 18 guides by December 2026. These resources aim to promote more inclusive and sustainable integration, ensuring that everyone has the necessary tools to participate actively in Portuguese society.
